“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”
Exodus 3:14

The Truth

Moses asks a reasonable question at the burning bush: who exactly shall I say sent me? God’s answer is strange until you sit with it. He does not give a name that compares him to anything else. He gives a name that simply says he is. I AM. Not I was, not I will become, not I am like something you already know.

Everything else that exists depends on something. You depend on air, food, a heartbeat you did not start and cannot maintain by will. God depends on nothing. He is the one fixed point everything else hangs from, self-existing, needing nothing outside himself to keep being who he is.

This is why he can be trusted with a promise. A God who might run out of resources, patience, or existence itself would be a fragile foundation for your life. But I AM does not run out. He is not becoming more himself over time. He simply is, today, exactly as he has always been.

When your circumstances shift under you, this is the ground that does not move. Not a God who might show up. The God who already, always is.

Live This Truth

  • Name one area of your life that feels unstable right now.
  • Say slowly: the God over this is the God who simply is, unchanging.
  • Rest one worry today on his constancy instead of your control.

Prayer

Lord, everything in me depends on something else, but you depend on nothing. Be the fixed point today under everything that feels like it is shifting. I rest in the God who simply is. Amen.

Carry this today

He does not become. He simply is.
