He Is Good, and Doeth Good

“Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.”
Psalm 119:68

The Truth

Ten days in, this is the verse everything else was pointing toward. Not just that God does good things, though he does, but that goodness is what he is, all the way through, before he does anything at all. His actions flow from his nature. He does not have to work himself up to kindness. It is simply who he is.

This is the answer to every honest question you have ever had about pain, about delay, about the parts of your story that did not make sense. Not a full explanation, scripture rarely hands you that, but a settled floor to stand on: whatever else is true, this is true. He is good. What he does flows from what he is.

The psalmist’s response to this truth is not passive admiration. Teach me thy statutes, he says. If God is good, then his instructions are not restrictions to work around. They are the wisdom of a good Father who wants his good for you more than you have ever wanted it for yourself.

Carry this forward into the next twenty days, because the Son and the Spirit you are about to study more closely are not separate from this goodness. They are this same good God, revealing more of himself. He is good, and he does good. Build the rest on that.

Live This Truth

  • Write down one thing about God’s character from this week that most steadied you.
  • Name one instruction of his you have resisted because it felt like restriction, not wisdom.
  • Thank him today, specifically, for being good before you needed proof.

Prayer

Lord, you are good, and you do good. Let that truth be the floor I stand on for everything I cannot yet explain. Teach me your ways, because I trust the one giving them. Amen.

Carry this today

He is good, and what he does flows from what he is.
