Made in the Likeness of Men

Part Two · the Son · 1 minute read

“Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.”
Philippians 2:6-7

The Truth

This passage does not describe a demotion forced on Jesus from outside. It describes a decision made from inside. He was equal with God and did not have to grasp for that status, because it was already fully his. What he chose to do with it was empty himself, not of his deity, but of his rights, his comfort, his reputation.

Made himself of no reputation is a striking phrase. He arrived without the credentials people expected, born to poor parents in an occupied backwater, and let himself be misunderstood, underestimated, and eventually executed as a criminal. Every bit of that was available to him to avoid. He chose it anyway.

This is the paradox at the center of the Christian faith: full deity and full humanity, at once, without contradiction and without compromise to either. He did not trade being God for being human. He added a genuine, full humanity to an undiminished deity, and both remain true of him forever.

Why does this matter for you today? Because it means the God you are getting to know is not distant from what it costs to be human. He knows the form of a servant from the inside, not from a report.

Live This Truth

  • Name one area where you cling to status or reputation instead of serving.
  • Read Philippians 2:1-11 and notice what this humility is meant to produce in you.
  • Do one act of service today that costs you some reputation, quietly.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you held equality with God and let it go for a servant’s form. Teach me the same posture, not to prove myself but because you already did. Amen.

Carry this today

Full deity. Full humanity. Both, without contradiction.
