He Groans With Us

Part Three · the Spirit · 1 minute read

← Foundations

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
Romans 8:26

The Truth

Paul is remarkably honest here about prayer: we do not always know what we should pray for. Anyone who has sat in front of a hard situation with nothing coherent to say to God knows this experience. The words do not come, or the words that come feel inadequate to the weight of what you are carrying.

The Spirit’s response to this is not correction or disappointment. It is help. He himself intercedes, on your behalf, with groanings too deep for words, when your own words fail you entirely. This is one of the more tender pictures of the Spirit in all of scripture, praying for you precisely in the moments you cannot pray for yourself.

This should change how you approach prayer on your worst days. You do not need eloquence. You do not need to have your request perfectly formed before you bring it. You can come to God with a groan, a fragment, tears with no sentence attached, and the Spirit is already there, translating your inarticulate weight into intercession the Father hears and understands.

On the days you cannot find the words, do not stay silent out of embarrassment. Bring the wordless weight anyway. He is already interceding in exactly that condition.

Live This Truth

  • Name a situation right now where you genuinely do not know what to pray.
  • Bring it to God today without needing the words to be right or complete.
  • Trust the Spirit’s intercession to carry what your own words cannot.

Prayer

Spirit of God, you intercede for me when I have no words. I bring you my inarticulate weight today, trusting you to carry what I cannot form into sentences. Amen.

Carry this today

I do not need the right words. He is already interceding.
