“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit... But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.”
The Truth
Paul is writing to a church that had turned spiritual gifts into a competition, ranking some as impressive and others as forgettable. His correction starts with the source: diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. Different expressions, one origin, and that origin, not the impressiveness of the gift, is what actually matters.
Notice the purpose clause: given to every man to profit withal. Not given for private display, personal status, or spiritual pride. Given for the profit, the benefit, of the whole body. A gift that only serves the person who has it and never blesses anyone else has drifted from what it was given for.
This should quiet two opposite temptations. The first is comparing your gift to someone else’s and concluding yours is too small to matter. The second is treating your gift as evidence of your own spiritual superiority. Both miss the point. Every gift traces back to the same Spirit and exists to serve people other than yourself.
You have been given something by the same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead. It was not given to sit unused, and it was not given to make you impressive. It was given to profit the people around you. Use it today, quietly if needed, for someone else’s good.
Live This Truth
- Name one gift or ability the Spirit has given you that you have underused.
- Notice whether you compare your gift to others in pride or in discouragement.
- Use that gift today specifically for someone else’s benefit, not your own display.
Prayer
Spirit of God, you gave me what I have for the profit of others, not for my own status or shame. Help me use it today quietly, for someone else’s good. Amen.
Carry this today
Given for the profit of others, not for private display.
