“Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.”
The Ground
This psalm names a specific temptation that fallow seasons often carry: fretting over others whose ground seems to be producing while yours remains unplanted. Watching someone else prosper, seemingly without the struggle or the wait, has a way of curdling patient waiting into resentful comparison. This verse names that exact danger directly.
Notice the pairing: rest in the LORD, and wait patiently, set directly against fret not thyself. Fretting and resting are named here as opposites, competing postures that cannot fully coexist. The more energy spent fretting over someone else’s apparent ease, the less remains for actually resting in the LORD through your own season.
This is not a command to stop noticing reality. Others genuinely do prosper, sometimes through means the psalm elsewhere calls wicked. The instruction is not denial of that reality. It is refusal to let that reality determine your own posture, refusing to let another person’s harvest dictate how you carry your own fallow ground.
Whoever’s prospering has been quietly eating at your patience today, name it honestly, and then deliberately choose rest over fretting. Their ground is not your ground. Your waiting has its own purpose, regardless of what appears to be growing elsewhere.
Tend the Ground
- Name honestly who or what has been triggering fretful comparison in your waiting.
- Choose rest over fretting today, deliberately, as a repeated act of will.
- Remember your ground is not their ground, regardless of what appears to be growing there.
Prayer
Lord, I have been fretting over another’s apparent ease while my own ground stays unplanted. Help me rest in you instead, and release the comparison. Amen.
Carry this today
Fretting and resting cannot both be chosen. Choose rest.
