Sit Still, My Daughter

Part One · Waiting · 2 minute read

← The Fallow

“Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.”
Ruth 3:18

The Ground

Naomi speaks this to Ruth at a pivotal moment, after Ruth has taken real, deliberate action, and before the outcome is yet known. Notice what Naomi does not say. She does not tell Ruth to go take more action, to force the matter further, to manage the outcome herself. She says, simply, sit still.

This is a specific kind of waiting, not the waiting of a season with no action taken at all, but the waiting that comes after faithful action has already been taken, when the next move genuinely belongs to someone else. Ruth had done what was hers to do. What remained was not more striving, but sitting still while Boaz did what was his.

This distinction matters for fallow ground. Some waiting is passive because nothing faithful has yet been done. Other waiting is passive because everything faithful that could be done already has been, and what remains is genuinely outside your hands. Learning to tell the difference is part of waiting wisely rather than either neglecting your part or overreaching into someone else’s.

If you have already done what was faithfully yours to do, this is your word today. Sit still. Not because the outcome does not matter, but because the next move belongs to someone else, and your part now is trust, not further striving.

Tend the Ground

  • Examine honestly whether you have already done what was faithfully yours to do.
  • If so, practice sitting still today rather than continuing to force the matter.
  • Trust the next move to whoever it actually belongs to, rather than overreaching.

Prayer

Lord, I have done what was mine to do. Help me sit still now, trusting the next move to you and to whoever it rightly belongs, rather than forcing it myself. Amen.

Carry this today

Some waiting means trusting a move that is no longer yours to make.
