“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”
The Ground
This promise names something crucial that the rest of this movement has been building toward. The breaking up of fallow ground is not, in the end, primarily your own accomplishment through sufficient effort and self-examination. It is a gift God gives, a new heart, in place of the stony one that could not receive seed regardless of how diligently the surface was worked.
Notice the specific language: stony heart replaced with heart of flesh. Stone cannot receive seed no matter how thoroughly it is examined or how much effort is applied to it. What is needed is not better technique for working stone, but an actual transformation of the material itself, something only God can accomplish.
This should relieve pressure from anywhere this movement has felt like a demand for you to break your own heart open through sufficient willpower or sufficient sorrow. The actual breaking, in the deepest sense, is God’s own work, promised here directly, a new heart and a new spirit given, not manufactured by the one receiving them.
Whatever breaking you have been attempting through your own effort this week, bring it today to the one who actually promises to do this work. Ask for the heart of flesh directly. He is the one who takes away stone and gives, in its place, a heart that can actually receive what he wants to plant.
Tend the Ground
- Release any belief that this breaking depends entirely on your own sufficient effort.
- Ask God directly today for the new heart he promises, not merely better self-discipline.
- Trust this transformation as his gift, given, not a technique you must perfect.
Prayer
Lord, take away my stony heart and give me a heart of flesh, as you promised. This breaking is your work to do, not mine to manufacture through effort alone. Amen.
Carry this today
Stone cannot be worked into receiving seed. It must be replaced.
