“For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud... so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please.”
The Ground
Isaiah compares God’s word to rain and snow, sent down for a specific purpose, and not returning until that purpose is actually accomplished. This is worth applying directly to whatever word God has spoken over your own life during this fallow season, promises received, direction sensed, hope given even in the waiting.
Notice the confidence: it shall not return unto me void. Void here means empty, without effect, having accomplished nothing. God’s word, unlike so much that gets spoken casually and forgotten, is guaranteed here to actually accomplish its purpose, the way rain and snow reliably water the earth and produce growth, not occasionally, but as their actual nature and function.
This should steady any doubt about whether the specific things God has spoken to you, during waiting, during breaking, during this whole season, will actually come to anything. His word is not like ordinary human promises, sincere but sometimes unfulfilled. It functions like rain, purposeful, effective, guaranteed to accomplish what it was sent to do.
Whatever word you are holding onto from this season, however long it has taken so far to see it accomplished, trust this promise today. It has not returned void. It is still watering ground you may not yet be able to see the results of, and it will accomplish what it was sent to accomplish.
Tend the Ground
- Name the specific word or promise you are holding onto from this fallow season.
- Trust today that it has not returned void, even without yet seeing its full accomplishment.
- Thank God for a word that functions like reliable rain, not an uncertain human promise.
Prayer
Lord, your word over my life has not returned void. Like rain and snow, it is accomplishing what you sent it to do, even where I cannot yet see the result. Amen.
Carry this today
His word does not return void, even when the growth is not yet visible.
