A Friend Loveth at All Times

Part Two · Sharpened · 1 minute read

← The Fellowship

“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
Proverbs 17:17

The Body

This proverb names two distinct but related qualities, a friend’s love at all times, and a brother born specifically for adversity, suggesting genuine friendship is proven not merely in easy, pleasant seasons, but specifically in the hard ones, adversity being exactly the context this kind of relationship was, in some sense, born for.

This is worth examining against relationships that flourish easily during comfortable seasons but quietly fade or withdraw when genuine adversity arrives, when the relationship actually requires something costly, inconvenient, or difficult, rather than merely pleasant company during easier times.

This second movement has walked through much of what makes genuine friendship costly, sharpening, burden-bearing, honest confrontation, faithful wounds, confession. This proverb names the actual context all of this is aimed at, at all times, including specifically adversity, not merely the easier seasons friendship more naturally sustains itself through.

Consider today whether your own friendships have been tested by genuine adversity, either your own or a friend’s, and whether you have shown up, or been shown up for, in the way this proverb describes, love at all times, presence specifically in adversity, not merely during comfortable, easy seasons.

Strengthen the Body

  • Name a friendship currently facing genuine adversity, yours or theirs.
  • Show up specifically in that adversity today, not merely during easier, more comfortable seasons.
  • Thank God for a friend who has shown up for you specifically during hard seasons.

Prayer

Lord, let me be the friend who loves at all times, present specifically in adversity, not only during comfortable, easy seasons. Give me such friends too. Amen.

Carry this today

Friendship is proven specifically in adversity, not only in ease.
