By This Shall All Men Know

“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
John 13:34-35

The Body

Jesus names the specific evidence by which outsiders will recognize genuine discipleship: not primarily correct doctrine, impressive programs, or persuasive argument, but love one to another, the actual, visible quality of community relationships themselves, functioning as the outward witness this whole final movement has been exploring.

This closes the loop connecting this entire book’s three movements. The gathering, the sharpening, the burden-bearing, the confession, the mutual teaching, none of it was ever merely internal community maintenance, disconnected from mission. It was itself, all along, the actual, primary evidence by which all men will know genuine discipleship.

This reframes the sending this final movement has described. Outward mission is not entirely separate from the internal community life this book’s first two movements explored. The quality of love actually present within the gathered, sharpened community is itself the witness, visible to all men, not merely a private matter with no outward evangelistic significance.

Consider today how the actual love present within your own community, gathered and sharpened across whatever years, is functioning as witness to those outside it. This is not a separate task from genuine community life. It is, according to Jesus’s own words here, the actual, primary evidence of genuine discipleship itself.

Strengthen the Body

  • Consider how the actual love within your community is currently witnessing to outsiders.
  • Strengthen one specific expression of love today, mindful of its outward evangelistic significance.
  • Thank God that genuine community love is itself, not separately, the primary evidence of discipleship.

Prayer

Lord, let the love within our community be genuine enough that all men know we are your disciples by it. Let our gathered life itself be the witness you intended. Amen.

Carry this today

Genuine love within community is itself the primary evidence of discipleship.
