Striving Together

Part Three · Sent · 1 minute read

← The Fellowship

“That ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.”
Philippians 1:27

The Body

Paul names both stability and effort together here, stand fast, and striving together, unity and mission held in the same breath. This is not merely passive togetherness, but active, coordinated effort, one mind and one spirit aimed specifically at something, the faith of the gospel, not merely internal community harmony for its own sake.

This closes the connection this whole final movement has been drawing between gathered community and outward mission. Standing fast together is not the final goal in itself. It is aimed, specifically, at striving together for something beyond the community’s own internal life, the actual advance of the gospel this whole book’s outward movement has been describing.

This is worth examining against community that has settled into standing fast alone, unified and stable but not actually striving together toward anything beyond its own internal maintenance. Paul’s language insists on both together, stability that fuels genuine striving, not stability as a substitute for it.

Consider today how your own community’s unity might actually fuel genuine, coordinated striving for the gospel, not remaining merely stable and internally focused, but standing fast specifically in order to strive together, outward, toward the mission this whole final movement has been building toward.

Strengthen the Body

  • Examine whether your community’s unity fuels genuine outward striving or remains merely internal.
  • Identify one way to strive together with others today, coordinated, not merely individually.
  • Consider the faith of the gospel as the actual, specific aim this striving is meant to serve.

Prayer

Lord, let our unity fuel genuine, coordinated striving for the gospel, not remain merely internal stability. Let us stand fast together in order to strive together, outward. Amen.

Carry this today

Unity is meant to fuel striving, not substitute for it.
