As Unto the Lord

Part One · the Labor · 1 minute read

← The Field

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”
Colossians 3:23-24

The Work

Paul writes this to servants doing some of the least glamorous work available in his world, and he does not tell them to endure it while waiting for something more spiritual to come along. He tells them to do it heartily, fully, as to the Lord, as if Christ himself were the one receiving the labor, not merely the human employer standing over them.

This single sentence collapses a distinction many people quietly hold between sacred work and secular work, as if only ministry or obviously religious labor counts before God. Paul does not carve out that exception. Whatsoever ye do covers all of it, the desk job, the trade, the household task, the labor no one applauds.

This changes the audience your work is actually for. Most days you labor with an eye toward who is watching, whether a supervisor, a client, or your own reputation. Paul redirects the whole transaction. The Lord Christ is the one you are ultimately serving, whether or not any human notices the quality of what you have done.

Do the work in front of you today as if Christ himself will receive it directly from your hands, because according to this verse, in the truest sense, he will.

Do the Work

  • Name one task today you have been doing mainly for human approval.
  • Reframe it deliberately as work done directly for Christ, not for the audience watching.
  • Do that task with the heartiness this verse describes, regardless of who notices.

Prayer

Lord Christ, let me do today’s work as unto you, not merely for the eyes watching me. You are the one truly receiving this labor. Let it be worthy of that. Amen.

Carry this today

Every task has an audience of one who actually matters.
