Subdue and Have Dominion

Part One · the Labor · 1 minute read

← The Field

“Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”
Genesis 1:28

The Work

This is the first commission ever given to humanity, and it is fundamentally a work assignment. Subdue and have dominion are active, ongoing verbs, not a one-time task completed and finished. Humanity was given the earth as a project, unfinished on purpose, meant to be cultivated, developed, and stewarded across generations.

This reframes what your labor is actually connected to. Whether you farm, build, code, teach, or manage, in some small way you are participating in the same mandate given at creation, bringing order, fruitfulness, and good stewardship to some corner of the world God placed under human care.

Dominion here is not exploitation. It is stewardship modeled after the God who exercises his own dominion with care, provision, and wisdom. Work done in this spirit treats resources, people, and time as things to be cultivated responsibly, not merely extracted from for personal gain.

Your labor today, however small it feels, connects to this ancient commission. You are not just earning a wage. You are participating, in your own small field, in the ongoing work of subduing and stewarding a world God handed to humanity from the very beginning.

Do the Work

  • Name the specific corner of the world your work is responsible for stewarding.
  • Consider one way you could steward it more carefully rather than merely extract from it.
  • Do your work today as participation in an ancient, ongoing mandate.

Prayer

Lord, my work connects to the commission you gave at creation. Let me steward my corner of the world with the care you modeled, not merely extract from it. Amen.

Carry this today

My labor is small, but it connects to an ancient mandate.
