All That She Had

← The First

“And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing... For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.”
Mark 12:42, 44

The Treasure

Jesus names this widow’s small gift as significant precisely because of what it cost her, not what it amounted to. Others gave from abundance, sums likely far larger in raw amount, but given from surplus that cost them comparatively little. This widow gave two mites, small in amount, but all that she had, all her living, genuinely everything.

This reframes how giving is actually measured, according to Jesus’s own assessment here, not by the raw amount given, but by the actual cost, the proportion of what was possessed that was genuinely surrendered. Two small coins, given as literally everything, are named as more significant than large sums given from comfortable abundance.

This is worth examining honestly against however much your own giving has settled into comfortable proportion, calculated carefully to remain within safe, unfelt margins, rather than the kind of costly, all that she had generosity this widow modeled, giving that genuinely registers as sacrifice, not merely convenient surplus.

Consider today whether your own giving has ever approached this widow’s proportion, genuinely costly relative to what you actually possess, not merely comfortable and safely calculated. This does not require giving literally everything as she did, but it does invite examining whether any of your giving genuinely costs you anything at all.

Steward the Treasure

  • Examine honestly whether your giving has settled into comfortable, uncosted proportion.
  • Give one gift today that genuinely registers as sacrifice, not merely convenient surplus.
  • Consider this widow’s example as the actual measure of significant giving, not raw amount.

Prayer

Lord, let my giving reflect this widow’s example, costly relative to what I actually have, not merely comfortable surplus safely calculated. Amen.
