Of Thine Own Have We Given Thee

Part Three · Give First · 2 minute read

← The First

“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.”
1 Chronicles 29:14

The Treasure

David prays this after the people had given extraordinarily generously toward building the temple, and his own reflection on that generosity is worth noticing directly: for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee. Even the most generous giving, David insists, was never actually giving away something that was originally, truly theirs.

This closes the loop connecting this book’s first two movements into this final one. Seeking first assumed a proper ordering of priority. Sowing first assumed active, deliberate generosity. This final movement begins with the deepest foundation underneath both, ownership itself. All things come of thee. Nothing given was ever genuinely, originally yours to begin with.

This should reshape how you understand every previous day’s instruction about seeking and sowing. You were never being asked to give away what was truly, originally your own possession. You were being asked to steward, faithfully, what already, genuinely belonged to God from the very beginning, merely passing through your hands temporarily.

Whatever resources currently pass through your own hands, receive David’s reframe today as genuinely true. All things come of thee. Of thine own have we given thee. Let this be the actual foundation this final movement builds on, ownership rightly understood, before any further instruction about faithful stewardship.

Steward the Treasure

  • Examine whether you have been treating your resources as genuinely, originally your own.
  • Reframe one specific resource today as of thine own have we given thee, not truly yours to begin with.
  • Thank God today that even your most generous giving was never actually giving away your own.

Prayer

Lord, all things come of thee, and of thine own have I given thee. Let me steward, not own, what passes through my hands. This was never truly mine to begin with. Amen.

Carry this today

Even your most generous giving was never actually giving away your own possession.
