Why Do Thoughts Arise

Part Two · Wrestling · 1 minute read

← The Fog

“And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?”
Luke 24:38

The Fog

Jesus asks this question of his own disciples, worth examining directly, not harsh rebuke, but genuine, gentle inquiry, why do thoughts arise, worth holding as this movement’s own model, doubt met with curious, patient questioning rather than immediate, dismissive correction.

This is worth applying to your own honest thoughts, worth asking yourself this same gentle question, not why are you failing to believe correctly, but genuinely, curiously, why do these specific thoughts arise, worth examining their actual source with this same patient, non- judgmental curiosity Jesus modeled here.

Notice this happens immediately after the resurrection, worth holding as remarkable timing, even genuine, direct encounter with the risen Christ himself did not instantly eliminate all troubled thoughts, worth trusting as honest acknowledgment that doubt can persist even alongside genuine, significant spiritual experience.

Ask yourself today this same gentle question Jesus asked his own disciples, why do these specific thoughts arise, examining their actual source with patient curiosity, not harsh self-judgment, trusting that even genuine encounter with Christ does not instantly eliminate every honest, troubled thought.

Walk Through the Fog

  • Ask yourself today, gently, why specific troubling thoughts have actually arisen.
  • Examine their actual source with patient curiosity, not harsh self-judgment.
  • Trust that doubt can persist even alongside genuine, significant spiritual experience.

Prayer

Lord, why do thoughts arise in my heart? Ask me this gently, the way you asked your disciples, and let me examine their source with patience, not harsh self-judgment. Amen.

Carry this today

Doubt can be met with gentle, curious questioning, not immediate, harsh self-correction.
