“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”
The Reality
A lion does not charge the strong center of the herd. It circles, watches, and waits for the one that has wandered, the one that is tired, the one that is alone. Your enemy hunts the same way. He is not creative. He is patient, and he studies your patterns better than you do.
Notice the two commands before the warning: be sober, be vigilant. Sobriety is about your appetites, clarity instead of numbness. Vigilance is about your attention, watching instead of drifting. Most men are devoured not in a dramatic battle but in a slow fog, when they are too tired to notice and too numb to care.
Learn his three favorite hours. He comes when you are hungry, angry, lonely, or tired, and he comes when you are isolated, off routine, and secretly proud. These are not accidents. These are his hunting grounds, and yours are as predictable as anyone’s.
You will never out-strong the lion in a fair fight of raw willpower. But you can refuse to wander. Stay in the light, stay near your people, and stay honest about the hours when you are weak. The lion loses interest in a man who will not leave the herd.
The Battle Plan
- List the three situations where you are most often attacked and fall.
- Choose one of those situations you can avoid entirely today.
- For the one you cannot avoid, plan your escape route in advance.
Prayer
Lord, my enemy knows my patterns better than I do. Make me sober and make me watchful. Keep me from wandering off alone into the hours where I am weak. Cover the gaps I cannot cover myself. Amen.
Carry this today
The lion hunts the one who wanders. I will not wander.
