“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”
The Reality
Every man wants the finished tower. Few sit down and count what it costs to build. This is why so many begin the work of change with fire and finish it with excuses. They counted the reward but never the price, and when the price came due they called it quitting and called it wisdom.
So count it now, at the start, with open eyes. Becoming a man of character will cost you comfort. It will cost you certain friendships that only survive in the dark. It will cost you the easy dopamine you have organized your evenings around. It will cost you the version of yourself that got sympathy for staying broken.
Jesus is not trying to scare you off. He is trying to make you the kind of man who finishes. A half-built tower is a monument to a man who started without thinking. The world is full of them, and every one began with sincere emotion and ended when the cost arrived unannounced.
Count it today, deliberately and specifically. Write down what these thirty days will demand of you. A cost you have already accepted cannot ambush you later. A man who has counted the cost does not quit when it arrives; he simply pays what he already agreed to pay.
The Battle Plan
- Write down three specific things this work will cost you.
- Decide now, in advance, that you will pay each one.
- Tell one trusted person what you are building and why.
Prayer
Lord, I do not want to be a half-built tower, a monument to good intentions. Show me the full cost, and give me the resolve to pay it. Let me be a man who finishes what he starts before you. Amen.
Carry this today
I counted the cost. I will not quit when the bill comes.
