The Stronghold of Pride

Part Two · Break the Strongholds · 2 minute read

← The Forge

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Proverbs 16:18

The Reality

Pride is the oldest stronghold and the most disguised, because it rarely feels like arrogance from the inside. From the inside it feels like being right, being competent, being the one who does not really need help. It is the sin that convinces you it is a strength. That is exactly what makes it so deadly.

Watch how it works. Pride is what tells you your accountability is unnecessary, your sin is not that serious, and your struggle is different from other men’s. It is the voice that says you have this handled, right up until the moment you do not. Destruction does not come first. Pride comes first, and destruction only follows.

The desert fathers taught that pride is the root of every other passion, because it is the refusal to admit you are a creature in need of grace. A proud man cannot repent, because he cannot bear to be wrong. A proud man cannot be helped, because he cannot bear to need it. So he falls, alone, still insisting he is fine.

The cure is not self-hatred; it is honesty. Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is thinking of yourself less, and thinking of God rightly. Get low today, on purpose. Confess a weakness before it becomes a headline. The ground is the safest place to stand, because there is nowhere left to fall.

The Battle Plan

  • Confess one weakness today to someone before it becomes a crisis.
  • Ask for help with something you have been too proud to admit.
  • Do one hidden act of service that no one will ever know about.

Prayer

Lord, pride hides itself from me by feeling like strength. Expose it. Give me the humility to need you, to need others, and to bow low before I am brought low. Let me think of you rightly and of myself less. Amen.

Carry this today

The ground is the safest place to stand.
