“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
The Reality
The Bible gives two commands about temptation, and wisdom is knowing which one this moment calls for. Resist the devil, it says, and he will flee. But it also says flee from lust, flee from these things, and it means run, do not negotiate. The mature man knows the difference between the fight he must stand in and the fire he must simply run from.
Some temptations you resist standing your ground: doubt, discouragement, the lie about your identity. You plant your feet, take up the truth, and refuse to move. But other temptations, especially the ones tied to appetite and lust, are not to be debated at all. With those, the only winning move is distance. Joseph did not stay and reason with Potiphar’s wife. He ran, and left his coat in her hand.
Pride tells a man he can stay and handle it, that he is strong enough to linger near the fire and not be burned. That pride is exactly how strong men fall. There is no shame in fleeing; it is the strategy Scripture commands for the deadliest temptations. The man who runs is not weak. He is wise enough to know his own weakness.
And here is the promise underneath it all: there is always an escape. God is faithful, and he has built a way out into every temptation you will face. But an escape route only saves the man who takes it. Find the exit before you need it, and when the moment comes, do not admire the door. Walk through it.
The Battle Plan
- Sort your recurring temptations into two lists: stand, or flee.
- For your flee list, pre-plan the exact escape route and use it.
- The next time the fire is near, do not negotiate. Leave.
Prayer
Lord, give me wisdom to know when to stand and when to run. Kill the pride that thinks I can linger near the fire. Thank you that you always make a way out; give me the humility to take it every time. Amen.
