He Shall Hide Me

Part Two · the Refuge · 1 minute read

← The Fortress

“For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.”
Psalm 27:5

The Shelter

David uses three related images here, pavilion, tabernacle, rock, each describing a different aspect of the same refuge. A pavilion offers covering, shelter from what is falling or bearing down. A tabernacle offers a dwelling place, somewhere to actually reside rather than merely pass through. A rock offers elevation and stability, ground that does not shift.

Notice the repeated verb: hide. Twice in this single verse, David describes being hidden, not exposed for display, not left vulnerable in open view of whatever trouble is pursuing him. This is a legitimate part of what refuge offers, not only comfort but genuine concealment, protection from being fully seen and reached by every threat.

This matters for grief that has left you feeling exposed, watched, or scrutinized by others in ways that add to the weight of the original loss. This verse offers a place where that exposure is not the final word, where hiddenness itself, in God’s specific care, is part of the actual shelter being provided.

Whatever trouble is currently pursuing you, whatever exposure has added to your grief, receive this verse’s specific promise today. You are not required to remain fully exposed to it. There is a pavilion, a tabernacle, a rock, and a shepherd willing to hide you in all three.

Take Refuge

  • Name any way your grief has left you feeling exposed or watched by others.
  • Ask for the specific hiddenness this verse describes, not just general comfort.
  • Rest today in being covered rather than remaining fully exposed to every threat.

Prayer

Lord, hide me today in your pavilion, your tabernacle, upon your rock. I do not have to remain fully exposed to this trouble. Cover me, the way you covered David. Amen.

Carry this today

Refuge includes being hidden, not only comforted.
