Feet Like Hinds’ Feet

Part Three · the Rock · 2 minute read

← The Fortress

“The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places.”
Habakkuk 3:19

The Shelter

Habakkuk writes this verse after an extended, honest complaint against God earlier in the same short book, questioning injustice and waiting for answers that were slow to come. This final verse arrives not because every question was fully answered, but because something has shifted in Habakkuk’s own posture, a renewed strength he attributes directly to the LORD, not to his own resolve.

The image of hinds’ feet is specific and worth noticing. A hind, a female deer, moves through difficult, rocky, elevated terrain with remarkable sure-footedness, able to traverse ground that would be treacherous for most other creatures. Habakkuk asks not for easier terrain but for feet capable of navigating the terrain he actually has.

This is a different kind of request than asking for the difficulty itself to be removed. It is asking for the capacity to walk steadily through it, high places included, ground that remains genuinely difficult but is no longer beyond your ability to navigate. Strength given for the actual terrain, not a wish for different terrain altogether.

Whatever high, difficult places grief has required you to walk through, this verse offers a specific kind of prayer. Not necessarily for the difficulty to vanish, but for feet made sure enough, by his strength and not your own, to actually walk that ground without falling.

Take Refuge

  • Name the specific difficult terrain grief currently requires you to walk through.
  • Ask today for sure footing on that terrain, not necessarily for the terrain to change.
  • Trust his strength, not your own resolve, as the actual source of steady footing.

Prayer

Lord God, you are my strength. Make my feet like hinds’ feet on this difficult ground, and let me walk these high places steadily, by your strength and not my own. Amen.

Carry this today

Not easier ground. Sure footing for the ground I actually have.
