“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
The Shelter
This verse arrives in the same chapter that opened, back on day five of this book, with I am the man that hath seen affliction, darkness but not light. The same voice, the same honest darkness, and now, further into the same chapter, this turn: it is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed. The darkness did not disqualify this hope. It preceded it, in the same breath.
Notice new every morning. This is not a single dramatic rescue that resolves everything at once, but a daily renewal, fresh mercy arriving with each new day rather than a stockpile that might eventually run dry. Yesterday’s mercy does not have to stretch to cover today. Today receives its own, new, sufficient for what today actually requires.
This matters for grief that has lasted longer than you expected, requiring mercy not just once but morning after morning, in a sustained, ongoing way. This verse describes exactly that kind of sustained provision, not a single well that might run dry under prolonged demand, but a source renewed daily, matched to the actual length of the need.
Whatever morning you are waking into today, however many mornings this grief has already required, this verse promises new mercy specifically for this one. Great is thy faithfulness, not merely once, long ago, but proven again, specifically, in the mercy arriving with today’s sunrise.
Take Refuge
- Notice this specific morning’s mercy, distinct from yesterday’s, as its own gift.
- Trust his faithfulness is sustained daily, not a stockpile that might run dry.
- Thank him today specifically for mercy new to this morning, not borrowed from before.
Prayer
Lord, your compassions fail not, and they are new to me this morning specifically. Great is your faithfulness, proven again today, exactly when I needed it renewed. Amen.
Carry this today
Mercy is not a stockpile. It is new, specifically, every single morning.
