He Wist Not

Part One · Bound · 1 minute read

← The Freed

“And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.”
Judges 16:20

The Chain

This is one of scripture’s most sobering verses, worth sitting with directly: he wist not, Samson genuinely unaware that his own strength, the LORD’s own presence and power, had actually departed, still assuming, confidently, I will go out as at other times before, while the actual reality had already, quietly changed.

This is worth examining against whatever confidence you carry that your own strength against a particular pattern remains what it once was, assuming as at other times before, while some gradual, unnoticed erosion may have already, quietly occurred, without your own full awareness that anything has genuinely changed.

Notice this did not happen suddenly. Samson’s story describes a gradual pattern of compromise leading to this moment, each individual compromise seemingly survivable, until this final one produced consequences none of the earlier ones had, his strength genuinely gone, and he himself the last to know it.

Consider today honestly whether gradual compromise in your own life may have quietly eroded strength you still assume remains fully intact, examining your own actual current capacity honestly, rather than confidently assuming, like Samson, as at other times before, when the actual reality may have already, quietly changed.

Break the Chain

  • Examine honestly whether gradual compromise may have quietly eroded strength you assume remains intact.
  • Test your own current capacity honestly today, rather than confidently assuming past strength still holds.
  • Notice any pattern of individually survivable compromises that may be accumulating toward genuine danger.

Prayer

Lord, let me not be like Samson, confidently assuming strength that may have already, quietly departed. Show me honestly where gradual compromise has actually left me. Amen.

Carry this today

Gradual compromise can erode strength you still confidently assume remains intact.
