Teach Them Diligently

Part One · Root · 1 minute read

← The Fruit

“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
Deuteronomy 6:6-7

The Tree

Notice where this instruction begins: shall be in thine heart. Before any teaching of children is described, the words have to actually be in the parent first, genuinely held, not merely known well enough to recite. Teaching that flows from a heart where the words already live is different from teaching borrowed secondhand for the occasion.

Notice also where this teaching is meant to happen: sittest in thine house, walkest by the way, liest down, risest up. This is not primarily formal instruction scheduled for a set time each week. It is woven through the entire ordinary rhythm of a day, morning to night, at home and on the road, constant rather than occasional.

This reframes what teaching children faithfully actually requires. Not a single impressive lesson delivered occasionally, but an ongoing, woven-through-the-day diligence, words genuinely held in your own heart first, then naturally surfacing across the actual texture of ordinary life together, not reserved for special, formal moments alone.

Whatever you hope to teach the children in your care, ask today whether it is genuinely in your own heart first, and whether you are willing to let it surface across the whole ordinary rhythm of your days, not only in the moments set aside specifically for teaching.

Tend the Tree

  • Name one truth you want in your own heart more fully before you can teach it well.
  • Look for one ordinary moment today, sitting, walking, rising, to weave in real teaching.
  • Notice whether your teaching has been mostly formal, occasional, or woven through daily life.

Prayer

Lord, put your words genuinely in my heart first, then let them surface naturally across this whole day, in the ordinary moments, not only the formal ones. Amen.
