Nurture and Admonition

Part One · Root · 1 minute read

← The Fruit

“And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
Ephesians 6:4

The Tree

Paul pairs a warning with an instruction here, and both matter equally. Provoke not your children to wrath names a genuine danger, parenting that unnecessarily antagonizes, that corrects harshly or inconsistently, that provokes anger rather than genuinely shaping character. This is named directly, not assumed away as an unlikely risk.

The alternative offered is nurture and admonition, both held together. Nurture alone, without admonition, can drift into permissiveness, never actually correcting what needs correcting. Admonition alone, without nurture, can become the harsh provocation Paul just warned against. Both are required, in the same balanced breath.

Notice of the Lord qualifies both nurture and admonition. This is not simply your own preferred parenting style, whatever that happens to be, but nurture and admonition patterned after the Lord’s own character, his patience, his genuine correction, his refusal to either coddle or provoke unnecessarily.

Examine your own parenting today honestly. Has it drifted toward provoking wrath, harsh or inconsistent correction, or has it drifted the opposite direction, nurture without any real admonition. Ask for the Lord’s own balance, both held together, patterned after his character rather than your own default tendency.

Tend the Tree

  • Notice honestly whether your parenting has drifted toward provoking wrath or toward permissiveness.
  • Correct one specific imbalance today, moving toward the Lord’s own balanced pattern.
  • Ask for nurture and admonition held together, not one without the other.

Prayer

Lord, do not let me provoke my children to wrath, but also do not let me drift into mere permissiveness. Bring them up through me in your own nurture and admonition. Amen.

Carry this today

Nurture and admonition, held together, patterned after the Lord.
