Turn the Heart

Part Three · Harvest · 1 minute read

← The Fruit

“And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.”
Malachi 4:6

The Tree

This closing promise in the Old Testament names something worth taking seriously: the mutual turning of hearts, fathers to children and children to fathers, described as genuinely significant, its absence carrying real, sobering consequences. Generational connection, this verse insists, is not merely sentimental. It is spiritually consequential.

Notice the turning runs both directions, fathers toward children and children toward fathers, mutual rather than one-directional. This is not simply about parents pouring into children while children remain passive recipients. It describes genuine relational turning, both generations actively oriented toward each other, connected rather than merely coexisting.

This is worth examining honestly in your own family, whatever its current shape. Has your own heart genuinely turned toward your children, attentive, present, invested. And is there evidence of your children’s hearts turning toward you in return, connection genuinely flowing both directions, not merely obligation flowing one way.

Whatever turning is currently missing in your own family, in either direction, ask God today for this specific promise, hearts genuinely turned toward each other, fathers to children and children to fathers, the mutual connection this closing Old Testament promise names as significant enough to prevent an actual curse.

Tend the Tree

  • Examine honestly whether your own heart has genuinely turned toward your children.
  • Notice any evidence, or absence, of your children’s hearts turning toward you in return.
  • Take one deliberate step today toward this mutual turning, in whichever direction needs it most.

Prayer

Lord, turn my heart toward my children, and turn their hearts toward me, genuinely, mutually, the way this promise describes. Do not let us merely coexist. Amen.

Carry this today

Turned hearts run both directions, not merely parent toward child.
