“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed.”
The Refining
Paul lays out a chain here, each link produced by the one before it, and none of them skippable. Tribulation produces patience. Patience produces experience, a proven, tested character. Experience produces hope, not wishful thinking but settled expectation. And that hope, Paul says, does not disappoint, because it is anchored in something real.
The order matters. You cannot get to durable hope without going through the earlier links, and you cannot manufacture patience or proven character on demand, apart from actual tribulation. This is not a chain you can shortcut by reading about it. It is built only the way Paul describes, through the actual weight of what you are carrying now.
This reframes what this exact season is doing, even while it feels like nothing but loss. It is not a delay before the good things start. It is the first link in a chain that leads, eventually and reliably, to a hope that will not let you down. The tribulation is not separate from the hope. It is how the hope gets built.
So do not measure this season only by what it is costing you today. Measure it also by what chain it is quietly forging, link by link, toward a hope that holds.
In the Fire
- Trace the chain in your own life: what tribulation, what patience, what hope is forming.
- Resist the urge to skip ahead to hope without honoring what the tribulation is producing.
- Trust today that this link in the chain is not wasted.
Prayer
Lord, I cannot skip to hope without walking through this tribulation first. Build the chain you describe here in me, link by link, until I reach a hope that does not disappoint. Amen.
Carry this today
Hope is not a shortcut around tribulation. It is built through it.
