The God of All Comfort

Part Three · the Gold · 2 minute read

← The Furnace

“Blessed be God... the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”
2 Corinthians 1:3-4

The Refining

Paul names something here that reframes the whole purpose of the comfort you have received in your own fire. It was never meant to end with you. It was given so that you may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, using the exact comfort you yourself received. Your fire is being converted into someone else’s future rescue.

This is a strange kind of economy. Nothing about your suffering is wasted if it is later poured out as comfort for someone else walking through the same kind of trouble. The specific comfort God gave you, shaped precisely to your specific pain, becomes a tool you now hold that you did not have before the fire.

This does not mean you owe anyone your story before you are ready, or that comfort has to be immediately converted into ministry while the wound is still open. It means that eventually, in his timing, what nearly broke you becomes the exact thing that equips you to sit with someone else who is breaking.

You may not be ready today to comfort someone else with what you are still carrying. But hold onto this: nothing you are receiving from God right now in this fire is being wasted. It is being stored up for someone who will need it later.

In the Fire

  • Name the specific comfort God has given you in your own trial so far.
  • Consider who, someday, this exact comfort might be meant to reach.
  • Receive comfort today for your own sake first, without rushing to give it away.

Prayer

God of all comfort, thank you for what you have given me in this fire. Let none of it be wasted. Store it up in me for whoever will need it after me. Amen.

Carry this today

Nothing given to me in this fire is wasted. It is being stored up.
