“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
The Truth
Before there was light, before there was land, before there was anything shaped or ordered, the Spirit of God was already present, moving over the formless deep. The Spirit is not a later addition to the story of God, arriving after the Father and the Son to fill some remaining gap. He is there from the very first page, active in creation itself.
The word used for moved carries the sense of hovering, the way a bird hovers protectively over what it is about to bring to life. This is not a distant, mechanical force. It is a personal presence, attentive and purposeful, hovering over chaos with the intention of bringing order, beauty, and life out of it.
This same pattern shows up later in John’s gospel, when the risen Jesus breathes on his disciples and says receive ye the Holy Ghost. The same Spirit who hovered over the formless deep at creation is breathed into ordinary men to begin a new creation in them. Chaos to order, death to life, this is what the Spirit does, then and now.
Whatever feels formless and void in your own life right now, this is not unfamiliar territory to the Spirit of God. He specializes in hovering over exactly that kind of chaos and bringing life out of it.
Live This Truth
- Name one area of your life that currently feels formless, void, or chaotic.
- Ask the Spirit today to hover over that specific area with his life-giving presence.
- Read Genesis 1:1-3 and John 20:22 together and notice the pattern.
Prayer
Spirit of God, you hovered over the formless deep and brought order and life. Hover over the chaos in me today, and do again what you have always done. Amen.
