He Is Coming Again

Part Two · the Son · 2 minute read

← Foundations

“Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
Acts 1:11

The Truth

The disciples are standing there, necks craned upward, watching Jesus ascend, and two angels interrupt with a promise rather than an explanation. This same Jesus will come again, in the same bodily, visible way he left. The story of the Son is not open-ended. It has a stated destination, and the destination is his return.

This closes the arc that began ten days ago in a manger. The Word who was with God became flesh, lived, taught, suffered, died, rose, ascended, and reigns now, and none of that is the final chapter. He is coming again, not as a vague spiritual idea but as the same Jesus, visibly, to finish what has already been decisively won at the cross and the empty tomb.

Notice the gentle correction in the angels’ question. Why stand ye gazing up into heaven. Not: stop hoping for his return. Rather: do not let the hope of his coming become an excuse to disengage from the work in front of you now. The disciples’ next move was not to keep staring skyward. It was to go and live as his witnesses.

You are living between the ascension and the return, in the same in-between the first disciples occupied. Live today with both eyes open: one on the work in front of you, one on the promise that this same Jesus is coming back.

Live This Truth

  • Name one way the hope of Christ’s return should change how you live today.
  • Resist the urge to either ignore this hope or use it as an excuse to disengage.
  • Do one act of faithful, ordinary obedience today as his witness, not a spectator.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are coming again, the same Jesus who ascended. Let that hope steady me without letting me disengage from the work you have given me today. Amen.

Carry this today

Not gazing at the sky. Faithful with what is in front of me.
