Seeth in Secret

← The Face

“That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.”
Matthew 6:4

The Face

Jesus names a specific kind of seeing here, seeth in secret, deliberately contrasted with the public recognition the surrounding verses warn against seeking. This seeing does not require an audience. It happens specifically in secret, where no one else is watching, and it is named as genuinely, fully sufficient.

This is worth holding against however much your own sense of being seen has become dependent on public recognition, visible achievement, or others’ actual awareness of what you do. Jesus’s own teaching here suggests the deepest, most significant seeing happens specifically where no one else observes at all.

Notice thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. The secret seeing is not described as a lesser substitute for public recognition, something to settle for when visibility is unavailable. It is named as the actual, primary reality, with any eventual open reward flowing from this deeper, hidden seeing, not replacing it.

Consider today whatever you do that no one else observes, unnoticed acts of faithfulness, private struggles no one witnesses, ordinary obedience with no audience at all. Receive Jesus’s own promise that this is precisely where the deepest seeing happens, thy Father which seeth in secret, fully aware regardless of visibility.

Turn Your Face

  • Notice any dependence on public recognition for your own sense of being genuinely seen.
  • Consider one act of private faithfulness today, done specifically without any audience.
  • Trust that this secret seeing is genuinely sufficient, not a lesser substitute for public recognition.

Prayer

Lord, you see in secret, where no one else is watching. Let this be genuinely sufficient for me today, not merely a consolation for whatever recognition remains unseen. Amen.

Carry this today

The deepest seeing often happens specifically where no one else is watching.
