“So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.”
The Body
Paul names something worth sitting with carefully here: members one of another. Not merely members of a common body in the abstract, but specifically, relationally, members of one another, belonging to each other in a genuine, mutual way, not merely coexisting within the same institutional structure.
This is a stronger claim than merely attending the same gathering or subscribing to the same beliefs. It describes actual, mutual belonging, one member genuinely belonging to another, not simply alongside another. This reframes how much genuine claim other believers actually have on your own time, resources, and attention.
This is worth examining honestly against how much genuine mutual belonging your own community relationships actually carry, versus how much remains comfortable, low- commitment association, present at the same gatherings without the deeper, mutual belonging this verse describes as the actual, intended reality.
Consider today one specific relationship within your own community, and ask whether it reflects this deeper mutual belonging, members one of another, or whether it has remained comfortable, surface-level association. Deepen it today, deliberately, toward the genuine mutual belonging Paul actually describes.
Strengthen the Body
- Name one community relationship that has remained surface-level rather than mutual belonging.
- Deepen it today, deliberately, through one specific, genuine act of belonging.
- Consider what genuine claim other believers actually have on your time and resources.
Prayer
Lord, let me genuinely belong to my fellow believers, and let them genuinely belong to me, members one of another, not merely comfortable, surface-level association. Amen.
Carry this today
Members one of another, genuinely belonging, not merely coexisting.
