“And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.”
The Body
This verse describes a genuine, shared nervous system running through the body of Christ, one member’s suffering registering, felt, throughout the whole, and one member’s honor producing genuine rejoicing throughout the whole as well. This is not merely sympathetic courtesy extended toward others. It is described as actual, shared experience.
This is worth examining against how genuinely connected your own experience of community actually is. Does another member’s suffering actually register with you, affecting you the way this verse describes, or does it remain comfortably distant, acknowledged politely but not genuinely felt as your own concern within the shared body.
Notice also or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice. This runs in both directions. Genuine community is not only about shared suffering, but also shared joy, another’s honor or success producing real rejoicing rather than quiet comparison, envy, or indifference toward what does not directly benefit you.
Consider today someone in your own community currently suffering, and someone currently being honored, and examine whether your own response genuinely matches this verse’s description, suffering with the sufferer, rejoicing with the one honored, both as genuinely your own experience, not merely polite acknowledgment from a comfortable distance.
Strengthen the Body
- Name someone currently suffering in your community, and genuinely enter into that suffering today.
- Name someone currently being honored, and genuinely rejoice with them, not merely acknowledge it.
- Notice any comfortable distance you have kept from others’ experience, and close it today.
Prayer
Lord, let another’s suffering genuinely register with me, and another’s honor produce genuine rejoicing, not comfortable distance or quiet comparison. Amen.
Carry this today
Genuine community shares both suffering and joy, not merely acknowledges them.
