“For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.”
The Body
Paul introduces the body image here that will shape much of this book’s understanding of community, one body, many members, both truths held together without collapsing into either extreme. Not merely many disconnected individuals loosely associated, and not a single undifferentiated mass with no genuine distinction between members. Both unity and diversity, together.
This corrects two opposite errors community can drift toward. One treats the body as merely a collection of independent individuals, each pursuing private faith with minimal genuine connection to others. The other treats the body as demanding uniformity, each member expected to look and function identically, diversity of gifting flattened into sameness.
The actual picture Paul gives is neither. Many genuinely different members, each contributing something distinct, and yet one body, genuinely unified, not merely a loose federation of independent parts. This tension, unity and diversity together, is not a problem to resolve but the actual, intended shape of genuine Christian community.
Consider today your own place within this one body, many members. What distinct contribution are you making, as a genuinely different member, while remaining genuinely united with the whole. Both matter. Neither uniformity nor isolation is the actual biblical picture.
Strengthen the Body
- Name one specific way you contribute distinctly, differently than other members around you.
- Notice whether you have drifted toward isolation or toward pressure to be uniform.
- Engage today with the body as both genuinely distinct and genuinely united.
Prayer
Lord, let me be a genuinely distinct member, contributing what only I can, while remaining genuinely united with the whole body. Let me neither isolate nor flatten into sameness. Amen.
Carry this today
Many genuinely different members. One genuinely united body.
