The Fervent · Day 19 of 30

In Quietness and Confidence

Part Two · the Quiet · 1 minute read

← The Fervent

“For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.”
Isaiah 30:15

The Prayer

This verse offers something specific, in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength, and then immediately records the response: and ye would not. This is not a promise Israel simply had not yet received. It is a promise they were offered, understood, and actively refused, preferring frantic self-reliance to the quiet strength God was actually offering.

This is worth sitting with honestly, because the same refusal is often quietly repeated. Quietness and confident rest do not feel like strength in the moment they are needed most. Frantic activity, anxious striving, and constant motion feel more like strength, more like doing something about the problem, even when scripture names the opposite as the actual source of strength.

Notice the pairing again: quietness and confidence together. This is not merely stopping activity out of exhaustion, a passive collapse. It is quietness paired with confidence, a deliberate, trusting stillness, actively choosing rest because you actually believe he is trustworthy, not merely because you have run out of other options.

Whatever frantic striving you have substituted for genuine quiet confidence today, consider Israel’s refusal as a warning worth heeding rather than repeating. The strength offered here is still available. Do not let it be true of you also that ye would not.

Watch and Pray

  • Name any frantic striving you have substituted for genuine, confident quiet.
  • Choose quietness paired with confidence today, not passive collapse from exhaustion.
  • Trust the strength this quiet confidence offers, rather than repeating Israel’s refusal.

Pray This

Lord, you offer strength in quietness and confidence, and I have too often chosen frantic striving instead. Let me not repeat that refusal today. Give me quiet, trusting rest. Amen.

Carry this today

The strength was offered. Do not let it be refused again today.
