A Thirty Day Watch

The Fervent

Thirty Days of Effectual Prayer

Begin Day 1 ↓

Thirty Days · Cry, Quiet, And Watch

For the one learning to cry out, listen, and watch, in a life of real prayer.

This is not about technique. It is about actually meaning it when you pray.

For the next thirty days you are going to practice the kind of prayer James called effectual and fervent, earnest rather than routine, engaged rather than distracted. This will not be a set of formulas. It is meant to help your prayer life become genuinely alive, whatever its current condition.

The work is arranged in three movements of ten days each. First, the Cry: coming to God honestly and boldly, learning to ask and keep asking. Then, the Quiet: listening, waiting, actual communion rather than one-directional requesting. Then, the Watch: sustained, persevering intercession for others, not only for yourself.

Each day gives you the same tools. A verse to anchor you. A short reflection to be read slowly, not skimmed. A response to actually practice, because truth about prayer that stays theoretical changes little in an actual prayer life. A prayer to pray in your own words. And one line to carry with you into the day ahead.

How to use it: read one day before you pray, unhurried, in order if you can. Let the reflection shape how you actually pray that same day, not merely inform your thinking about prayer. Actually do the response. Pray the written prayer, then keep praying in your own words.

All Scripture here is from the King James Version. Fervent prayer actually avails much. Begin, expecting that to be true.

“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16
