“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”
The Prayer
This verse follows Paul’s description of spiritual armor, and it is worth noticing where he places it, not as one more piece of armor listed alongside the rest, but as the ongoing activity that sustains the wearing of all the others. Praying always, watching thereunto, is the atmosphere the whole armor is worn within, not a separate, occasional add-on.
Notice the phrase watching thereunto with all perseverance. This is not a single act of prayer offered once and then set aside. It describes ongoing vigilance, sustained attentiveness, the kind of watching that does not relax simply because the initial urgency has passed. Perseverance implies a real, sometimes lengthy duration this watching must actually endure.
Notice also this watching is specifically for all saints, not only for your own needs. This closes the movement of this book from personal crying out and quiet listening into something wider: watching, persistently, on behalf of others, an outward-facing vigilance rather than a purely private practice.
This third movement of the book turns from your own prayer life toward intercession for others, sustained, watchful, persevering. Begin this turn today, praying not only for your own needs but watching, with genuine perseverance, over the needs of others God has placed near you.
Watch and Pray
- Name one person you are called to watch over in prayer, not merely pray for once.
- Commit today to sustained, persevering prayer for them, not a single request.
- Widen your prayer today beyond your own needs toward all saints, deliberately.
Pray This
Lord, teach me to watch, persistently, not just for myself but for all saints. Give me perseverance in this, not a single prayer offered and then set aside. Amen.
Carry this today
Watching is sustained, not a single act. Persevere in it.
