Praying in the Holy Ghost

Part Three · the Watch · 2 minute read

← The Fervent

“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.”
Jude 1:20-21

The Prayer

Thirty days ago this book began with a claim about effectual, fervent prayer, and it closes here with a picture of what that fervency is meant to build toward across an entire life, not a single season of intensive practice, but an ongoing pattern: building up yourselves, praying in the Holy Ghost, keeping yourselves in the love of God, looking for what is still to come.

Notice praying in the Holy Ghost. This closes the loop from day seventeen’s description of the Spirit interceding when your own words fail. Prayer, across this whole book, has never been a purely self-generated discipline, willpower alone sustaining fervency. It has been, throughout, Spirit-enabled, from the crying out through the quiet listening through the persistent watching.

This closing verse also looks forward, not merely backward over the thirty days completed. Looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life places this entire practice of prayer within a much longer story, one that continues well past this book’s final page, an ongoing posture rather than a completed thirty-day project now finished and set aside.

You began this book learning to cry out. You end it here, watching, interceding, building yourself up in prayer offered in the Spirit’s own strength, not yours alone. Carry this fervency forward, not as a finished exercise, but as the ongoing shape of a life still looking, still praying, still watching for what is still to come.

Watch and Pray

  • Write down the single truth from these thirty days that most reshaped how you pray.
  • Commit today to praying in the Holy Ghost, not by willpower alone, going forward.
  • Tell one person this week something true about prayer you did not know a month ago.

Pray This

Lord, build me up on my most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keeping myself in your love, looking for what is still to come. Let this fervency continue past this page. Amen.

Carry this today

Not a finished exercise. An ongoing life, still watching, still praying.

Still Watching, Still Praying

Thirty days ago you began with a claim: the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

You know now what that fervency actually asks of you: crying out, growing quiet, and watching.

This was never a thirty-day project meant to end here. Carry the fervency forward, into a life still praying, still watching, still building itself up in the Spirit.

Building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
