The Field · Day 20 of 30

An Excellent Spirit

Part Two · the Excellence · 1 minute read

← The Field

“Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him... they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful.”
Daniel 6:3-4

The Work

Daniel’s political enemies searched deliberately for grounds to accuse him and found nothing, not because he was flawless in every sense, but because he was consistently faithful, with no gap between his public role and his private character for them to exploit. This is excellence tested under hostile scrutiny, and it held.

Notice this happened in a pagan government, under a king who did not share Daniel’s faith, in a system that would have rewarded compromise or corner-cutting for personal advantage. Daniel’s excellent spirit was not dependent on a favorable, faith-affirming environment. It was consistent regardless of who was watching or what system he served within.

This closes the second movement of this book with the strongest possible test case. It is one thing to be diligent when your work environment shares your values and rewards your integrity. It is another to remain faithful, without occasion or fault, when the system around you would have tolerated, even rewarded, compromise.

You may be working today in conditions less friendly to your integrity than you would like. Daniel’s example does not require friendly conditions. It requires an excellent spirit, faithful enough that even careful scrutiny finds nothing to fault. Carry that standard forward into whatever field you work in.

Do the Work

  • Name one area of your work where compromise would currently be easy and unnoticed.
  • Choose faithfulness there specifically, regardless of whether the system rewards it.
  • Ask God today for an excellent spirit that holds under real scrutiny.

Prayer

Lord, give me an excellent spirit like Daniel’s, faithful enough to withstand real scrutiny, regardless of whether my circumstances reward integrity or not. Amen.

Carry this today

An excellent spirit holds up even under hostile scrutiny.
