“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
Hebrews 13:5

The Treasure

Notice the reasoning this verse gives for contentment: not because such things as ye have happen to be sufficient by ordinary standards, but because he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Contentment here is grounded specifically in God’s own presence and promise, not in the adequacy of current material circumstances.

This matters because contentment grounded merely in sufficient circumstances remains fragile, threatened whenever circumstances change for the worse. Contentment grounded in God’s unchanging presence, by contrast, can remain stable even through genuinely difficult material seasons, since its actual foundation was never the circumstances themselves.

This offers a needed corrective against covetousness, which this verse names directly, the restless comparison and craving for more that erodes contentment regardless of how much is actually possessed. Covetousness is not primarily about the amount currently held. It is about a restless heart never satisfied with whatever that amount happens to be.

Whatever discontentment or covetousness you are currently carrying, regardless of your actual material circumstances, bring it to God today specifically, grounding your contentment not in whether you have enough by comparison to others, but in his own promise, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, as the actual, stable foundation.

Steward the Treasure

  • Notice any covetousness or restless comparison currently present in your own heart.
  • Ground your contentment today specifically in God’s presence, not your circumstances.
  • Thank God today for his promise never to leave or forsake you, regardless of what you have.

Prayer

Lord, let my contentment rest in your presence, not my circumstances. Remove covetousness, and let I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, be my actual foundation. Amen.

Carry this today

Contentment grounded in God’s presence is more stable than contentment grounded in enough.
