Shall Not Be Satisfied

← The First

“He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.”
Ecclesiastes 5:10

The Treasure

The Preacher names a specific, sobering pattern here: love of silver never actually reaches satisfaction, regardless of how much silver is actually accumulated. This is not merely a moral warning, but an empirical observation, the actual, repeated experience of those who pursue satisfaction through accumulation alone, generation after generation.

Notice nor he that loveth abundance with increase. The pattern is not solved by simply acquiring more. Increase does not produce the satisfaction love of abundance was seeking in the first place. The love itself, disordered and insatiable by its very nature, ensures that whatever threshold is currently sought will simply move further once it is reached.

This names a trap worth recognizing honestly in your own financial aspirations. If satisfaction is being sought specifically through increase, through reaching some future threshold of accumulated wealth, this verse warns that threshold will simply recede further once reached, the same insatiable pattern repeating indefinitely, never actually arriving at satisfaction.

Consider today whether your own pursuit of financial goals has quietly become this kind of insatiable pattern, satisfaction perpetually deferred to some future threshold that, once reached, will simply move again. Seek satisfaction today somewhere this verse insists it can actually be found, not in silver or abundance themselves.

Steward the Treasure

  • Notice any pattern of deferring satisfaction to a future financial threshold.
  • Examine whether that threshold has already moved once or twice as you approached it.
  • Seek genuine satisfaction today in something other than silver or abundance itself.

Prayer

Lord, deliver me from the insatiable pattern of seeking satisfaction through increase alone. Let me find genuine satisfaction in you, not in a threshold that keeps moving. Amen.

Carry this today

Love of silver never reaches satisfaction. The threshold always moves.
