Did Not Our Heart Burn

Part One · Kindled · 1 minute read

← The Flame

“And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”
Luke 24:32

The Flame

These two disciples, walking to Emmaus, only recognize afterward what had actually been happening while Jesus walked and talked with them, unrecognized, along the road. Their own retrospective question is worth noticing directly, did not our heart burn, a genuine, physical sensation they had actually experienced, even before full recognition arrived.

This is worth holding as a needed reminder that genuine encounter with Christ can produce real, felt response, even when full understanding lags behind, a burning heart preceding complete recognition, worth trusting as genuine evidence of his actual presence, not requiring full theological clarity before the heart’s own response becomes valid.

Notice while he opened to us the scriptures, the specific means named for this burning, scripture itself, rightly opened and understood, producing this genuine, felt response, worth applying directly to your own engagement with scripture, watching for this same burning as genuine evidence of his actual, present activity.

Consider today whether your own engagement with scripture has produced this kind of genuine burning recently, or whether it has become routine, technically correct but no longer actually kindling this felt response. Ask specifically today for Jesus to open the scriptures to you again, the way he did on this road, producing genuine burning.

Tend the Flame

  • Notice whether your own scripture engagement has produced genuine burning recently, or become routine.
  • Ask Jesus today to open the scriptures to you, specifically, the way he did on this road.
  • Pay attention today to any burning heart, trusting it as genuine evidence of his actual presence.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, open the scriptures to me today, the way you did on the road to Emmaus. Let my heart burn within me, genuine evidence of your actual, present activity. Amen.

Carry this today

A burning heart can precede full recognition. Trust it as genuine evidence of his presence.
