The Flock · Day 6 of 30

He Shall Gently Lead

Part One · the Shepherd · 2 minute read

← The Flock

“He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.”
Isaiah 40:11

With the Shepherd

Isaiah writes this in the middle of a chapter dominated by God’s overwhelming power, the one who measures the oceans in his hand and holds the nations as a drop in a bucket. And then, without any shift in subject, the same chapter describes this same God carrying lambs in his bosom and gently leading the weak ones. Power and gentleness are not opposites here. They live in the same shepherd.

Notice the specific care given to two categories: the lambs, too young and weak to keep pace, and those that are with young, slower and more vulnerable than the rest of the flock. A shepherd who only cared for the strongest sheep would leave both of these behind. This shepherd adjusts his pace specifically for the weakest ones.

If you are in a weak or slow season, exhausted, carrying something that makes ordinary pace impossible, this verse was written with you specifically in mind. The shepherd does not shame the lambs for needing to be carried, or rush the ones with young past their capacity. He gathers and gently leads, matching his pace to their need.

Whatever weakness or slowness you are carrying today, this is not a shepherd who expects you to match everyone else’s stride. Let him gather you close and gently lead, at whatever pace you actually need.

Follow His Voice

  • Name honestly whether you are currently more lamb or full-grown sheep, pace-wise.
  • Release the pressure to keep up with a pace not meant for your current season.
  • Let him gather you close today rather than pushing ahead alone.

Prayer

Lord, you carry the lambs and gently lead those who cannot keep pace. I am weak and slow today. Gather me close, and lead me gently, at the pace I actually need. Amen.

Carry this today

He adjusts his pace for the weakest ones. Even for me.
