That Great Shepherd of the Sheep

Part One · the Shepherd · 1 minute read

← The Flock

“Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight.”
Hebrews 13:20-21

With the Shepherd

This benediction ties the resurrection directly to the title great shepherd of the sheep. Jesus is not called shepherd only during his earthly ministry, walking dusty roads with a small following. He is named great shepherd specifically in connection with being raised from the dead, a shepherd whose care did not end at the cross and could not be stopped by the grave.

This matters because a shepherd who stayed dead would be a shepherd with limited reach, present only in memory. The resurrection is what makes this shepherd’s ongoing, present care for you possible at all. He leads now, not merely as a remembered example, but as a living shepherd, actually present with the flock today.

Notice what this great shepherd is described as doing in you: making you perfect in every good work, working in you what is wellpleasing in his sight. This is not passive shepherding, content merely to keep the flock alive. It is active, ongoing formation, shaping the sheep toward something good, in partnership with them, not merely over them.

As this first movement closes, carry this title forward: not a shepherd remembered from long ago, but the great shepherd, alive, present, and actively working good in you today, through a covenant that does not expire.

Follow His Voice

  • Thank God today specifically for a shepherd whose care did not end at the cross.
  • Ask him to work in you what is wellpleasing in his sight, not merely to keep you safe.
  • Trust his active, present leadership today, not merely a remembered example.

Prayer

Great Shepherd, you are alive and present, not merely remembered. Work in me today what is wellpleasing in your sight, through the covenant that will never expire. Amen.

Carry this today

Not a shepherd from memory. A shepherd who is alive, right now.
