“And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.”
With the Shepherd
Jesus speaks here of sheep beyond the immediate fold his first hearers belonged to, a deliberate widening of the picture. This is not a private shepherd tending an exclusive, closed group. He names a larger gathering already in view, sheep not yet visibly part of the fold, whom he still calls his own and intends to bring in.
This should reshape how you think about the flock you belong to. It is not a small, closed circle defined by who currently looks and sounds like you. The shepherd’s own words describe a gathering deliberately larger than any single fold, drawing from places and people not yet visibly included, toward one fold, one shepherd.
This has practical weight for how you treat those currently outside whatever fold feels familiar to you. If the shepherd himself says other sheep I have, sheep he already claims even before they are gathered in, that should temper any instinct to treat outsiders as permanently other rather than as sheep not yet brought home.
Whoever feels outside your current fold today, remember the shepherd’s own scope is wider than any single gathering. Pray today for those he has already named as his, not yet visibly part of the flock, but already known and called by the same voice you are learning to recognize.
Follow His Voice
- Name someone who currently feels outside your familiar circle or fold.
- Pray for them today as one the shepherd already calls his own, not yet gathered.
- Widen your own posture toward outsiders, the way this verse widens the fold.
Prayer
Lord, your fold is wider than the one I feel most familiar in. Bring in the other sheep you already claim, and give me a heart as wide as yours toward them. Amen.
Carry this today
The fold is wider than what feels familiar to me.
