My Cup Runneth Over

“Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”
Psalm 23:5

With the Shepherd

Anointing with oil in this era carried the sense of honor, refreshment, and blessing, a gesture of genuine welcome extended to a guest, not a bare minimum obligation. David describes receiving this kind of honor from the shepherd himself, not scraps of leftover care but deliberate, generous blessing, poured out specifically over him.

Notice the image that follows: my cup runneth over. Not merely full, adequate, sufficient. Overflowing, more than what is strictly needed, generous past the point of mere provision. This is the shepherd’s abundance on display, not a rationed portion carefully measured to the minimum required.

This corrects any picture of God as a reluctant, minimalist provider, dispensing exactly enough and no more, as if generosity were a resource he needed to conserve carefully. This psalm describes overflow, oil poured out and cups running over, the actual character of a shepherd whose provision does not stop at bare sufficiency.

Receive today’s provision the way this verse describes it, not as a rationed minimum you should be grateful merely survived on, but as genuine abundance, poured out deliberately, overflowing past what was strictly necessary.

Follow His Voice

  • Notice where you have expected only bare-minimum provision from God.
  • Look today for evidence of actual overflow, not merely rationed sufficiency.
  • Receive one specific blessing today as deliberate abundance, not a scrap.

Prayer

Lord, you do not ration your care to bare minimums. You anoint and overflow. Let me receive today’s provision as the genuine abundance this psalm describes. Amen.

Carry this today

Not bare minimum. Overflow.
