“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
With the Shepherd
Thirty days ago you began with a claim, the LORD is my shepherd, and this final verse closes the same psalm with a settled confidence built on everything walked through since. Not merely goodness and mercy hoped for, but goodness and mercy shall follow me, an active pursuit, trailing you through every pasture and every valley alike.
Notice the word follow. This is not goodness and mercy waiting somewhere ahead, to be reached eventually if you manage the journey well enough. It is behind you, following, present in every day already walked, not only the days still to come. Looking back over your own thirty days, and over your whole life, this same following mercy has been there.
The psalm closes not with a return to ordinary pasture but with a home: I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. This is the actual destination all the shepherding in this book has been leading toward, not an endless cycle of pastures and valleys with no resting place, but a house, permanent, where the flock finally, fully dwells.
You began this book as a sheep learning to trust a shepherd. You end it the same way, still a sheep, but thirty days more familiar with his voice, his rod and staff, his prepared table, his overflowing cup. Whatever pastures and valleys remain ahead, goodness and mercy are already following you into them, all the way home.
Follow His Voice
- Write down the single truth from these thirty days that most reshaped how you see God.
- Look back over your own life and name where goodness and mercy have already followed you.
- Tell one person this week something true about the shepherd you did not know a month ago.
Prayer
Lord, you are my shepherd, and goodness and mercy have followed me through every day of this study and every day before it. Lead me all the way home, to dwell with you forever. Amen.
Carry this today
Goodness and mercy are already following me home.
Goodness and Mercy Are Following
Thirty days ago you began with a claim: the LORD is my shepherd.
You know his voice a little better now. His rod and staff. His prepared table. His overflowing cup.
Whatever pastures and valleys remain ahead, you do not walk them as a stranger to the shepherd’s voice anymore. Keep following.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Psalm 23:6
