Take No Thought for the Morrow

Part Two · Anchored · 1 minute read

← The Flood

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
Matthew 6:34

The Storm

Jesus names a specific, practical instruction here, no thought for the morrow, worth examining directly, because much genuine anxiety involves precisely this, borrowed trouble from a future day not yet actually arrived, worth holding as needed correction against carrying tomorrow’s genuine or imagined difficulty into today’s actual burden.

Notice sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, an honest acknowledgment that today already carries genuine difficulty of its own, not denying real hardship, but insisting this day’s actual portion is sufficient, without additionally importing tomorrow’s separate, not-yet- arrived portion on top of it.

This is worth examining against however much your own anxiety has involved this specific pattern, mentally living in a future day not yet actually here, multiplying today’s genuine difficulty by tomorrow’s imagined or anticipated difficulty, rather than this verse’s own instruction, addressing only today’s actual, sufficient portion.

Whatever tomorrow’s worry currently sits on top of today’s own actual burden, practice today Jesus’s own specific instruction, releasing the morrow’s separate portion, not because tomorrow does not matter, but because today’s own sufficient difficulty does not require this additional, borrowed weight.

Find the Still

  • Notice any worry today that actually belongs to tomorrow, not to today’s own actual portion.
  • Release tomorrow’s separate portion today, deliberately, addressing only today’s own sufficient difficulty.
  • Trust that tomorrow will genuinely take thought for its own things, not requiring your advance worry now.

Prayer

Lord, let me take no thought for the morrow, addressing only today’s own sufficient portion, not multiplying today’s burden with tomorrow’s separate, not-yet-arrived weight. Amen.

Carry this today

Today’s sufficient difficulty does not require tomorrow’s additional, borrowed weight.
